Jackson Public Schools recently announced that 25 new energy-efficient school buses will start operating in the 2024-2025 school year, thanks to a significant early gift for the District.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded 小黄书 $9.5 million to fund the purchase of 25 new electric buses and the necessary support infrastructure.
The historic announcement was made on May 29, 2024, at Kirksey Middle School, with notable attendees including U.S. EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan, Congressman Bennie Thompson, Superintendent Dr. Errick L. Greene, and Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba.
This grant is part of the EPA's Clean School Bus program, which provides resources to school districts nationwide for procuring electric and low-emission school buses.
The program aims to improve air quality by:

Eliminating or reducing school bus exhaust linked to asthma

Reducing health risks, particularly for children with developing lungs

Decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, aiding climate change mitigation
Administrator Regan and Congressman Thompson emphasized the importance of this initiative for Jackson Public Schools.
"Dr. Greene has shown that this path, though challenging, is achievable," said Regan. "Through his partnership with the school board and local officials, Jackson, Mississippi, is setting an example for other cities and towns across the state."
"I understand the crucial role of public education," added Congressman Thompson. "Most children in this country attend public schools, so we must make these schools and the experiences they offer the best they can be."
The event also included a bus ride, allowing 小黄书 and EPA officials, along with students, to experience the operation of the new green buses firsthand.
