Celebrating the Class of 2024
June 5, 2024
Jackson Public Schools held graduation ceremonies May 30 & 31 to celebrate our 1,147 graduating seniors. |
Jackson Public Schools proudly celebrated the graduates of its seven high schools in separate ceremonies held inside the Mississippi Coliseum May 30-31, 2024. Each commencement featured addresses from the valedictorian, salutatorian as well as members of student government bodies. School principals also encouraged scholars before inviting them to cross the stage to receive their diplomas. At Wingfield High School, a somber tribute was held to retire the school's flag as the class of 2024 would be the last to graduate under the Wingfield Falcons banner. The last official day of classes at Wingfield High School was Wednesday, May 29, 2024.
A sobering moment at Wingfield's graduation ceremony as the school retires its banner. The school closed at the end of the 2023-2024 school year. |
In all, 1,147 graduates received diplomas over the two days of ceremonies held at the Mississippi Coliseum, and they had much to celebrate. A total of 22 scholars graduated from the С»ÆÊé-Tougaloo Early College High School and earned Associate of Arts degrees alongside their high school diplomas. Tougaloo College offered all 22 J-TECHS graduates scholarships covering full tuition. Most of these graduates have committed to furthering their education at universities within the state of Mississippi.
Additionally, the class of 2024 had two Gates Scholarship recipients: Jerry Palmer of Forest Hill and Camilah Cousin of Murrah. Keisa Currie-Ball of Forest Hill is a 2024 Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship recipient. Each of these students will receive up to $40,000 in paid tuition to attend the college of their choice and a paid internship offer at Amazon after their freshman year of college.

Salute to Scholars
The Top 10 scholars from each school were recognized in the 44th Annual Salute to Scholars Program held Monday, May 20, where 11 high schoolers, including five seniors, were inducted into the ACT 30+ Club. This club recognizes students who have earned a 30 or higher on the ACT college admissions test. The new inductees brought the club's total membership to 22. Three students earned the Mississippi Economic Council's Star Student Achievement Recognition, which emphasizes scholastic excellence and encourages greater effort among Mississippi students. These scholars must have an ACT score of at least 25 and an overall grade average of 93 or above in select subjects taken in 9th through 12th grades.
