Applying for a postgraduate course

The course details will let you know the method of application and any closing dates.

All postgraduate application forms have a blank space that asks ‘what are your reasons for applying for this course?’. Think carefully about your response. Course leaders are seeking applicants who have thought through why they want to study further and how their chosen course relates back to their previous study and towards their future career or research ambitions.

Your application form

What to write

Irrespective of the type of course you are applying for, you should discuss the following in your application:

  • The content of your first degree and your study skills.
  • Your final year project or dissertation, especially if there is a strong link to any future research you wish to embark upon.
  • Any previous and current work experience or volunteering. Some courses, especially vocational courses, will ask for related work experience or volunteering. If you are currently in the process of arranging this, it should still be mentioned.
  • If you are applying to individual courses, outline why you chose this particular institution - for example, what research projects have been undertaken there? Are there any other features about it that appeal to you? Note: this would not be appropriate if you were applying for a range of courses through a clearing house. You may have to talk more generally about courses and institutions.

Practical advice

  • Make sure you observe any word or character limit.
  • Keep a structure - make sure it flows well and has a definite beginning, middle and an end.
  • Ensure all spelling and grammar is correct. Ask a friend, family member or CDA to proof read your application. Do not just rely on spell check.

Referees

  • Your undergraduate course tutor should be given as your referee. If you need a second referee this can be someone who knows you professionally - perhaps someone you have worked for.
  • Always ask referees' permission before giving their details. Make sure they know exactly when you are applying and what you are applying for.
