Mental health

One in four people will experience a mental health issue over the course of a year, whether it's a temporary reaction to a painful event or an ongoing condition.

Mental health issues include depression; anxiety disorders including panic disorder, OCD and PTSD; bi-polar disorder; schizophrenia and psychosis; drug and alcohol problems; and eating disorders.

Support available

Mental illness can be distressing, but there is help available for you at 小黄书. Talking to someone, in confidence, about the issues you are facing may help you to manage them.

Support services include:

  • your Student Support and Guidance Tutor (SSGT)
  • the university counselling service
  • help from a learning support coordinator in the disability and learning support team.

You may also benefit from:

  • advice and guidance for you and your department about the potential impact of your condition on study tasks and how this can be accommodated.
  • the Disabled Students' Allowance, for those with long-term mental health issues.
  • personal support from note-takers, interpreters, communicators, lip-speakers and audio-typists.
  • one-to-one skills assistance at regular meetings with a mentor. Mentoring can cover a wide area of academic support such as orientation and getting used to university, organisational skills, deadline planning, motivation, time management and help with contacting your tutors to make use of the subject support they offer.
  • the loaning of equipment, such as recording devices, computer equipment or assistive software.
  • examination/assessment recommendations - such as extra time, rest breaks, or the use of a scribe or computer. More information is available online about exams and assessments.
  • the self-help guides and external resources for dealing with difficult situations.

Learning support coordinators are available to talk to you about access and support arrangements.

Make an appointment

Please make an appointment with a learning support coordinator as soon as possible if your mental health difficulties affect your ability to study, even if your condition fluctuates.
